There are a number of important factors involved in manufacturing fasteners for racing purposes.
The first notion that must be dispelled is that anything labeled “aircraft quality” is automatically the best thing there is. As government-certified manufacturers of mil-spec fasteners, ARP® knows well what standards must be adhered to. And they’re far less than what is necessary for racing. One thing you should know about airplanes is that virtually every fastener used is redundant. In other words, loads are spread among several fasteners in any given area, and if one fails the others can take up the slack. No big deal. In racing, you mostly don’t have that luxury. Lose one single rod bolt and you can kiss the engine goodbye. If a rocker arm stud fails it can lead to catastrophic valvetrain failure. And so on. That’s why ARP® engineers design each fastener to withstand loads far beyond normal expectations. By itself.
