The cork valve cover gasket is actually good. It's easier to get a cork valve cover gasket to seal than a rubber one.
On setting the timing, firstly, you didn't say what kind of distributor you have. So, I'm assuming you have the original type distributor.
Secondly, do you have the service manual? They are readily available and extremely helpful for "simple" things like this.
I'm attaching a few pages out of the Service Manual which might give you the information you are looking for.
There is also dwell which needs to be checked and set.
But, yes, if memory serves, pull the vacuum advance hose with the engine idling and check the timing. That will be your initial timing without any advance.
