It may seem like just a footnote at first, but New York State's S5603, currently in the Senate Rules Committee, would establish the "Motor Vehicle Owners Right To Repair Act of 2005."
The purpose of this bill is to force manufacturers to make all the information that a car owner would need to repair his vehicle available. This would include "information necessary to diagnose, service (and) repair...(including), but not be limited to, information necessary to integrate replacement equipment into the vehicle and other information of any kind used to diagnose, service, repair, activate, certify, or install any motor vehicle equipment (including replacement equipment) into a motor vehicle."
The bill specifically mentions (computer and diagnostic) access codes. While that may not affect too many of us today, it could end up being of huge importance forty years from now, when today's vehicles become tomorrow's classics.
